Journalism is at a fascinating intersection of prose and interpersonal research, and for that reason, many students choose to pursue it as an undergraduate major. If you’ve always been drawn to school newspapers and crafting editorial pieces, majoring in journalism could be a great next step toward a future career.

Why Should You Study Journalism in College?

Journalism can be a very competitive industry, and a successful journalist will have both honed their writing style and amassed hands-on experience in the field. A journalism major is a valuable step in achieving both of these goals.

Through this field of study, students will have the opportunity to refine and improve their writing with extensive feedback from instructors. In addition, pursuing a journalism major is key to getting internships and forging industry connections, both of which are necessary items in getting you the experience employers are looking for on a resume.

How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?

As with any college program, your academics are an extremely important component of your overall application. In particular, colleges will be looking for a solid GPA and a transcript that demonstrates a desire to challenge yourself. You should take challenging classes, though not at the expense of your grades. Strong writing and communication skills form the foundation of your toolbox in journalism, so demonstrating particular proficiency in courses which develop these skills can help make a compelling case for your future success as a journalist.

Another incredibly important component is extracurriculars. This is where you have the chance to demonstrate an enduring passion for, and experience in, journalism. As a high schooler, you are not expected to have extensive industry knowledge, but it would be beneficial to have a position on a school newspaper or magazine, or perhaps to have your own blog or platform. The point here is to show that your passion for journalism is not a whim, but rather that it is backed by experience and if possible, increasing responsibility.

If you’re worried about choosing the right courses or activities, the CollegeVine Early Advising Program helps students plan college applications as early as in the 9th or 10th grade. You will be paired with a mentor who will give you one-on-one coaching throughout all relevant steps, in order to get your ready for applying as a prospective journalism major.

How Do You Choose Your College List?

Coming up with your college list is one of the most important things you will do in the application process, as your acceptance outcomes are directly dependent on the quality of this list. We know the reality of this can be stressful, but we’re here to help.

In fact, the process of assembling a school list is fairly formulaic. First, you will want to determine your preferred program size and location. If you want to stay close to home, for example, that narrows your search. If you’re considering switching or adding majors at some point, you may be interested in attending a larger school with more resources. These are all things to consider in this first step.

The next step is trickier. It consists of matching your level of experience to colleges’ selectivity. As discussed above, this is dependent on academics and extracurriculars, so it’s important to be honest with yourself to ensure your subsequent list has safeties and targets, as well as one or two reaches. The most important thing is to have a few colleges on the list where an acceptance is all but guaranteed.

If this process makes you apprehensive, you are not alone. Our CollegeVine Applications Program specializes in helping students build a strong school list that optimizes their chances of acceptance into a strong program. These lists are tailored to a student’s preferences and experience, and with the help of our chancing engine, the mystery of outcomes is minimized.
