The List of All U.S Colleges With an Engineering Major
With over 5,000 colleges and universities in the United States, the search for the right institution for you can be overwhelming. However if you know you want to study engineering in college, this list of all the U.S. Colleges that offer an engineering major will help you find the schools that best fit you.
Why Should You Study Engineering in College?
Students who study engineering in college need an inquisitive, problem-solving mindset, supported by diverse analytical skills and knowledge of science, math, and technology. For those with this specialized blend of talents, an engineering degree opens the door to a variety of career paths that offer job security, high incomes and intellectual stimulation.
Engineering is a wide field that encompasses numerous areas of study. Aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering are just a few of the available fields—and sub-fields exist within these specializations. Thanks to this multitude of pathways, students can follow their interest in engineering in myriad directions.
Students graduating from college with an engineering degree can expect a strong return on their investment. The average median salary of an engineer is 2016 was $91,100, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS); petroleum engineers, the highest-paid field, earned a median salary of $128,230. That is more than double (and in the case of petroleum engineers, triple) the $44,564 annual salary brought home by the average U.S. worker.
Another position where engineers excel? CEO. Though some might imagine that CEOs usually have degrees in business or finance, the Harvard Business Review reports that 34 out of the top 100 CEOs in 2018 had an engineering degree—just edging out the 32 CEOs on that list who hold MBAs.
The financial stability that engineering jobs offer is not the field’s only attraction. On a day-to-day basis, engineers solve real-world problems, create elegant innovations, and work in dynamic teams. Engineers play an integral role in our daily lives; for example, they design the cars we drive and the cell phones in our pockets. Their innovations, from creating prosthetic limbs to improving energy efficiency, also have meaningful, positive societal impacts.
How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?
Having a strong, well-rounded application is essential to gaining acceptance into the engineering school of your choice. Due to the academic rigor of an undergraduate engineering education, prospective engineering students must maintain a strong GPA and take a rigorous course load, including advanced STEM classes, such as AP calculus or physics.
Depending on what field of engineering you’re interested in pursuing, other high-level classes will also strengthen your application. For example, AP chemistry would be a strong addition to the transcript of a student who wants to pursue chemical engineering. However, keep in mind that Advanced Placement courses should not be taken at the expense of your GPA—prospective engineering students may want to prioritize challenging science and math courses over other AP offerings.
Admissions officers also consider a student’s extracurricular activities when reviewing a college application. Joining your high school’s a engineering club (if they have one) or participating in other STEM-related activities (such as a robotics club or laboratory research project), can demonstrate your interest in the field—and help you find your specific passions within engineering. Academic competitions, like these 8 Engineering Academic Competitions for High Schoolers, also can demonstrate your active interest in engineering.
If your high school’s engineering offerings are limited, consider using your summer vacation to further explore the field. Colleges across the country offer summer programs that provide college-bound students with a chance to further explore fields of interest while engaging with college-level faculty and students.
