How Do Internships Impact Your College Chances?

Internships can play a large role in admissions decisions. This is especially true at selective colleges where internships can help applicants stand apart from crowded fields of applicants, the majority of whom all possess stellar academic records. That said, not all internships are equal in the eyes of college admissions officials.

The four tiers of extracurricular activities are a good way to understand how colleges value activities outside of the classroom, like internships. The most influential extracurriculars with colleges fall into Tiers 1 and 2—these activities are impressive, prestigious, and rare. More common and ordinary extracurriculars are placed in Tiers 3 and 4, which hold less weight with college admissions officials. Most internships will fall into Tier 3, though some may be Tier 1 or 2, depending on how selective they are and the degree of your responsibilities.

Want to know how your extracurricular profile stacks up? Our free admissions calculator can evaluate your extracurriculars and help you sort them into tiers. The calculator also uses factors like academics, demographics, and extracurricular activities to estimate your chances of admission at more than 1,600 colleges nationwide.
