The List of All U.S. Colleges With an Information Science and Technology (IT) Major
What to study? Where to study it? These two questions loom over the heads of college-bound high school students. If you’ve already answered that first question and settled on Information Science and Technology (IT), this list of all the US colleges that offer an IT major will be a springboard to help you answer the second.
Why Should You Study Information Science and Technology (IT) in College?
Perhaps the best reason to study Information Science and Technology is the U.S.’s rapid transition to an information-based economy. This shift has increased demand for employees with expertise in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields—including IT. In fact, job growth in STEM fields far outpaces the number of qualified job applicants: a Pew Research Center Study found that STEM employment has grown 79% since 1990—and computer jobs have increased a staggering 338% over the same period.
Experts project that STEM jobs, and IT-related jobs in particular, will continue to grow rapidly. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) expects above-average growth between 2016 and 2026 in STEM positions, including computer systems analysts (projected 9% growth), information security analysts (28%), and software developers (24%). An IT degree will open the door for positions—and many more.
Like most in-demand jobs, positions available to IT majors tend to be high paying. Here’s a look at the BLS’s reported median annual income for the aforementioned positions in 2018: computer systems analysts, $88,740; information security analysts, $98,350; and software developers, $103,620. All of these numbers are at least double the yearly income of the average American worker.
A major in Information Science and Technology can also facilitate a career in a variety of fields, making it easy for graduates to find employment in an area of interest. Today’s computer-based world needs people to keep those systems up and running in almost every field, including government, business, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and entertainment. With this wide selection, you have a good shot at finding a career that is not only well-compensated but will also allow you to use your technical expertise to solve problems that interest and excite you.
Another benefit of the demand for graduates with IT degrees is the flexibility and variety of positions available. IT degree holders can choose a position that aligns with not only their location preferences but also their lifestyle, because remote positions and/or flexible work hours are relatively common in the field.
How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?
To get into a top college’s IT program, your first priority should be academics. You should maintain a strong GPA and take high-level STEM-based classes, such as AP calculus and computer science. Additionally, applicants should perform well on standardized tests, especially the math section. Start prepping for the math section of the SAT today and check out our article Five Tips to Boost Your Math SAT Score.
Extracurricular activities are another major factor that college admissions officers consider when evaluating an applicant. If your high school has a computer science club, joining it can demonstrate your passion for the field beyond the classroom. If your high school doesn’t have a computer science club, you could even consider starting one! This sort of innovation shows exactly the sort of entrepreneurial spirit that’s coveted in the tech world. Want to start a computer science club? Unsure where to start? Read our blog How to Start a Computer Science Club.
If joining or starting a club doesn’t fit your preferences, there are numerous other activities that can build out your profile and demonstrate your interest in IT. Creating a website or an app is a great way to gain first-hand experience with applicable material—and can also showcase your creativity and commitment to identifying and addressing real-world problems.
If you’re in 9th or 10th grade, you’re ideally positioned to begin building your college profile and CollegeVine can help. Our Early Advising Program helps students determine which AP classes to take, what scores they need to get on their SATs, and which extracurricular will help them discover their interests and build a strong profile—putting them in the best position possible when it’s time to apply to college.
For students getting a later start on preparing for college admissions, our College Strategy Program is aimed at helping juniors prepare for college applications. Making the most of the little time students have left in high school, our Strategy Program helps rising seniors create an application plan, put together a school list, secure valuable letters of recommendation from respected sources, and create an extracurricular profile that admissions officials will notice.
