The List of All U.S Colleges With a Health Professions Major

Doctors and nurses are obvious choices when it comes to ensuring the continued health of society, but there are a wide range of professionals who support healthcare environments. From hospitals to clinics to corporations, healthcare professionals are a vital part in making all of our lives healthier.

Why Study Health Professions in College?

Health professions covers a wide range of careers and, depending on the school you go to, majors. In general, health professions include any job that someone might have while working in a healthcare setting, including doctors and nurses but also the plethora of administrators who support their work.

Some colleges have you start as a general health professions major before you specialize in a particular skill. You’ll learn the foundations you need to thrive in any healthcare setting and to better understand our current healthcare system, and then choose if you want to develop skills such as dental hygienist, radiology, or even veterinary technology.

Other programs may prepare you more for administrative roles, where you’ll focus on what’s needed to help hospitals and clinics thrive. You might prepare for leadership or management roles, learn about the roles that volunteers play, and how hospitals budget their finances and fundraise for important research.

Still other programs may include specific and distinct majors under the health professions department, such as Nursing, Psychology, or other majors that often have a health-oriented perspective.

Unlike other degrees which have more standardized curriculums, health professions runs the gamut of majors and careers. Even though it can be broad, there is a high demand for more healthcare professionals with a wide variety of skills; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States expects healthcare jobs to grow 18% by 2026, way more than other fields!

How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?

Although there are so many things that you can do with a degree in health professions, they all require the same foundational skills from high school. You’ll want to demonstrate your academic potential, especially since there’s a chance you’ll be taking challenging quantitative classes, along with proven social skills.

To show you’ve got what it takes, you’ll want to optimize your profile through your classes and extracurriculars. Do well in your current classes, and challenge yourself by signing up for advanced classes such as AP. It’s important to do well even in challenging classes, so balance out your course load and be sure to allow time to pursue meaningful extracurriculars. Consider volunteering at your local hospital, or participating in clubs and sports that you genuinely enjoy.

As we mentioned, each college handles health professions differently, so you’ll want to do research into the programs to make sure that it addresses what you’re hoping to get out of it. If you want to become a skilled technician, then look for programs that allow you to specialize; if you want to become a hospital administrator, then look for programs with curriculums surrounding leadership and management.

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices based on how well the program fits your preferences, you can get a rough idea of what your chances are by comparing yourself to that school’s freshman profile. The freshman profile (sometimes called the Class of ___ Profile) showcases the average GPA and test scores of the previous year’s admitted freshmen. The closer you are to these averages, the better your chances of getting in are.

You may also want to work with a company like CollegeVine. We guide you through the process of becoming a competitive applicant by pairing you a student from a top college. We’ll give you personalized advice about how to optimize your profile based on your goals, and we help you create a strong school list where you’ll know your exact chances of getting in.
