The List of All U.S Colleges With a Finance Major

Are you interested in studying finance in college and just getting ready to start building your list of potential schools to attend? If so, we’ve done the first step for you by compiling a list of all the colleges and universities in the U.S. that offer a degree in finance. Additionally, we’ve added some reasons to consider pursuing a degree in finance and a few tips for the application process.

 

Why Study Finance in College?

 

Students with an interest in business, a love of numbers, sharp analytical skills, and who are comfortable using technology will find the study of finance interesting and rewarding—The Washington Post calls finance “a math-focused” business major.

 

Students graduating from college with a degree in finance will have access to a large field, numerous career paths, and potentially lucrative work. Careers in finance aren’t limited to Wall Street, although many finance majors do undertake a position in trading. Other graduates with degrees in finance find careers as financial analysts or advisors, or in related industries like accounting and banking.

 

Globalization and a growing economy are helping spur employment in business and financial operations. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), positions in business and financial operations are anticipated to grow 10%—faster than the national average for all occupations—adding over 750,000 jobs between 2016 and 2026.

 

Technology is also fueling growth for employment in finance thanks to the increasing reliance on data collection and analysis in evaluating market strategies. As technology makes it easier and easier for businesses to collect data, they need people to extrapolate the numbers and convert them into business plans.

 

Economically, a degree in finance will pay off for most students down the road. According to the BLS, the median salary of a financial analyst was $85,660 in 2018. Personal financial advisors earn an even larger income, with a median salary of $88,890 in 2018. Furthermore, personal financial advisor positions are projected to grow far faster than the national average—15% between 2016-2026—thanks to an aging population and longer life expectancies.

 

How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?

 

With a wide variety of interesting and high-paying career paths, getting into a top-notch finance program can be challenging. The best way for students to ensure they get into their first-choice school is by maintaining a strong GPA while taking challenging coursework like AP statistics and calculus. Taking business classes and computer classes will also be beneficial to high school students who hope to pursue a finance major. Just remember not to spread yourself so thin that it hurts your grades!

 

For 9th and 10th graders just starting to think about college, our Early Advising Program can help students understand the grades and scores they need to achieve in order to get accepted into the institution of their choice. Guided by a graduate from a top 30 institution, students will build a roadmap to their dream school that ensures they take the right classes and participate in the right extracurricular activities.

 

Speaking of extracurricular activities, what you do outside of the classroom counts when applying to college—this presents a fantastic chance to stand out. Participating in a club like DECA or The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is a great way for high school students to demonstrate an interest in business and begin building a peer network with similar goals and aspirations.

 

If groups like DECA or the FBLA don’t appeal to you, perhaps a part-time job at a bank will help demonstrate an interest in finance to a college while also gaining practical, real-world experience in a professional environment. Another idea is to invest a small amount of money in the stock market and try to make it grow.
