The List of All U.S. Colleges With a Computer Engineering Major

Aspiring computer engineers have a lot to look forward to, namely secure jobs, seemingly boundless professional opportunities, and high-paying positions. However, they’ll also face a challenging college curriculum consisting of math, science, computer, and engineering courses. If your high schooler is considering a career in computer engineering, keep reading to see all the colleges in the U.S. that offer a computer engineering major and learn how to maximize the odds of your student getting into a top school.

Why Should You Study Computer Engineering in College?

An infamously difficult field, computer engineering blends computer science and engineering together to bring computing ideas into real-life working systems. Students earning a degree in computer engineering will graduate with the knowledge of how microprocessors are designed and function, along with how to optimize them. They will also understand how data is communicated between electronic components, and how connected electronics are constructed and operate.

As the U.S. continues to transform into an economy based on information and technology, a computer engineer’s role is becoming increasingly significant. Computer engineers are responsible for increasing the speed, power, and capabilities of software and hardware—pushing the bounds in technology in industries ranging from high-tech to energy to aeronautics.

The career prospects for students graduating with a degree in computer engineering are bright. According to the website PayScale, a computer engineering degree is the 20th highest paying undergraduate degree a student can receive. The average early-career annual salary (0 to 5 years out of college) for graduates with a degree in computer engineering is $72,600; by mid-career (10+ years) computer engineers earn an average of $120,000 per year.

As the world becomes increasingly digital and society becomes more and more reliant on computer systems, the need for computer engineers is only going to grow. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) projects the need for software developers to grow 24% between 2016 and 2026, which is approximately 5X faster than average. U.S. News ranks software developer as its number one job—based on a variety of factors including pay, challenge, stress, the opportunity for advancement, and work-life balance.

How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?

Computer engineering is a rigorous academic program and getting into a top school is competitive. To be considered for admission into a first-rate computer engineering degree program, students need to maintain a high GPA throughout high school while taking a challenging course load. AP classes in calculus and computer science are sure to be beneficial to high schoolers planning to pursue a degree in computer engineering.

Also important for students looking to get into in-demand programs is achieving high scores on standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. Check out our blog What is a Good SAT Score? to better understand what schools are looking for from applicants.

Our Early Advising Program can help 9th and 10th graders get a jump start on the college application process and put them on the path to the program of their dreams. Allowing students to make the most of their time in high school, our Early Advising Program helps students build strong academic and extracurricular profiles that colleges will notice—giving proactive young students an advantage over their competition.

If your student knows that they want to study computer engineering in college but are unsure where they want to study, they’re going to need to start building a college list. Students can narrow their selection by choosing schools that match their ideal college experience—removing schools that aren’t in line with their desired location, size, and beliefs.

Another way to whittle down their college list is by comparing their college profile with the freshman profile at schools they think they’re interested in attending. Freshman profiles summarize the academic qualifications, extracurricular activities, and demographics of accepted students and allow students to see how they stack up.

If building a college list and comparing your profile against those of various institutions feels overwhelming, CollegeVine can help. Our College Strategy Program helps students build their college list, provides insight into their chances of acceptance into particular institutions, and offers an accurate idea of what schools are reaches, targets, and safety schools.

Of course, our College Strategy Program is about more than building a list—it’s about building an attention-grabbing college profile. Working with CollegeVine, students will enhance their profile by ensuring they’re taking the right classes, participating in meaningful extracurricular activities, and acquiring letters of recommendation that will have an impact.
