The List of All U.S Colleges With an Anthropology Major
For some students, they know what they want to study better than they know where. If you fall into this category, then CollegeVine has you covered! We’ve rounded up all of the colleges that offer an anthropology major so you can begin creating your ultimate college list.
Why Study Anthropology in College?
Often contrasted with pragmatic majors like engineering or business, anthropology continues to entice students who are looking to think deeply about current issues and how we, as humanity, got to be where we are today. Anthropology takes a broad approach to the humanities, combining elements of psychology, sociology, history, and ethnic studies to figure out what it means to be human.
For students who value curiosity, exploration, and advanced analytical or critical thinking, this major might be perfect for you. Because of its broad scope and flexibility, students are often able to narrow down their interests and specialize through their extracurricular activities in college by pursuing niche research opportunities, internships, clubs and societies.
Study abroad and research are possibly the most appealing activities to complement any major, but these activities hold extra appeal for anthropology majors. Many anthropology majors participate in undergraduate research that relates to their future academic or career goals. Study abroad allows students to practice their observational skills and learn how to be at ease in unfamiliar environments, two crucial skills for anthropologists.
Anthropology majors often pursue graduate or professional education, especially law school. Those who don’t find that their major has prepared them with the general skills necessary to succeed in many jobs: flexibility, critical thinking and analysis, and strong communication skills, especially in writing. Ultimately, what students choose to do with an anthropology degree is up to them!
To sum it all up, you should consider studying anthropology if:
- You want to developing higher-level thinking skills.
- You are fascinated by humanity as a subject.
- You think that you would enjoy working at a college, in a library or a museum, or as a teacher.
- You want to pursue graduate school.
Read on to find out how to make the most of your chances at any school that offers an anthropology major.
How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?
For most anthropology programs, there won’t be a portfolio review or any additional application requirements beyond the general application. That means you’ll need to prepare a strong application by focusing on optimizing your profile and putting together an appropriate list of target schools.
In general, when putting together a school list, you’ll want to look at whether the school offers the major you are interested in (we’ve done the research for you below!) and other factors that matter to you. Some of these could include:
- In-state vs. out-of-state
- Private vs. public
- University vs. Liberal Arts College
Once you have a school list together, take a look at each school’s freshman profile (sometimes called a Class of ___ Profile). This is where schools include the average GPAs, test scores, and other quantitative facts about the students who chose to enroll in their school. You’ll want to be close to or above any of the quantitative measures the school lists to maximize your chances of getting in.
You can also choose to work with a company like CollegeVine. We cater to the needs of different grade levels when working with students. For 9th and 10th graders, we’ll analyze your current profile and pair you with a specialist from a top school. They’ll work with you so that you know what tests to take and the scores you need, the grades you should aim for, and what types of extracurriculars you should participate in to land a spot at your choice schools.
For 11th graders, we offer our College Strategy program, which focuses on both strengthening your profile through extracurricular involvement, securing recommendation letters in advance, and making final tweaks to your college list. High school seniors can take advantage of our College Applications Program, where we’ll calculate your real chances of getting into your dream school, help you with your essay, and work with you and your family to be able to finance your education.
No matter what major you plan on studying in college, understanding your chances and developing a strong profile will help you experience the greatest success during your college application process. To start, let’s look at colleges with an anthropology major.
