Buffalo State is considered a mid-sized school. They have about 8,000 students, with about 7,000 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students. Students from Buffalo State come from all over the United States, and there are many international students enrolled as well.

 

There are typically about 40 to 50 students per class at Buffalo State; however, once you have selected a major and finished your introductory courses or general requirements, your class size will typically drop.

 

What type of institution is Buffalo State?

 

Buffalo State is a part of the SUNY system, which is a network of 64 different campuses. Specifically, Buffalo State is considered in the category of a University College within the system, and the title of a University College is partially attributed to the size of Buffalo State. 

 

The other categories within the SUNY system include University Centers, Technology Colleges, and Community Colleges. 

 

What is the cost of attendance at Buffalo State?

As the name suggests, SUNY Buffalo State is located in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is the second largest city in New York state. This is a positive for many students who do not want to be in the New York City area. However, Buffalo is still a city with its own hustle and bustle.

 

The school is located right in the heart of the city, which means you are within walking distance to museums, local restaurants, and other popular areas. If you are able to, visiting the campus is a great way to get a sense of the city, and while you’re there you can also make a quick stop at Niagara Falls!

 

Student Life and Activities

 

What athletic programs are offered at SUNY Buffalo State?

 

Buffalo State is considered a Division III school for both Men’s and Women’s sports and has teams for football, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, lacrosse and softball.

 

If you are not on one of the varsity teams, however, you can still stay active as Buffalo State also has a wonderful fitness center, ice skating rink, and swimming pool which are all available for recreational use.

 

What is learning like at SUNY Buffalo State?

 

At Buffalo State, it is important for students to be involved inside and outside of the classroom, so internship opportunities are always recommended. Having an internship means getting practical experience and exploring essentially what you may want to do in the future. This allows students at Buffalo state to determine whether they want to pursue a career in something or if they should switch their intended path based on their actual interests.

 

For example, there is a local theater called Shay’s Performing Art Center in Buffalo where a student was able to intern. Through Hamilton, she was able to see how to work in a theater, navigate the demands, and act. 

 

What is campus life like at SUNY Buffalo State?

 

There are many opportunities at Buffalo State to stay involved and active on campus. They have clubs, organizations, and Greek Life on campus; some examples of clubs at Buffalo State include the Caribbean student organization, rowing club, and men’s and women’s rugby teams. 

 

The clubs and organizations at Buffalo state allow you to meet other people and explore new interests. There are also specific days on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays called bank pause, which is essentially where all the students go into the student union so they can see the clubs and organizations as well as the programs that are being hosted that week.

 

How to Apply to SUNY Buffalo State

 

You can apply to Buffalo State either through the SUNY application or the Common Application.

 

There are also two different application opportunities for students. There’s the general application or the EOP application. With that being said, you should consult your high school counselor, who will make sure that you are on the right road.

 

Additionally, SUNY Buffalo State is test-optional. This is a SUNY wide policy, not just for the Buffalo State institution, until the summer of 2024. This means that you do not have to submit your test scores if you choose not to. That being said, submitting your test scores does give you leverage over another student who did not submit their scores.
