The List of All U.S Colleges With an Environmental Science Major
Do you love spending time in nature and learning about how our planet works? Are you a recycling fanatic and do you stay up-to-date on climate issues and pollution? If so, you may want to consider majoring in environmental science.
Why Study Environmental Science in College?
Environmental science is a blended discipline, drawing from biology, chemistry, technology, engineering, history, and political science to understand the natural world and the relationship humans have to it. If you have a passion for our planet and enjoy your science classes, this might be the major for you.
Many environmental science majors enjoy the great outdoors, whether they love camping, hiking, swimming, or just being outside. They’re also concerned with research and news reports about climate change, pollution, and other signs that humans may be altering our planet in potentially damaging ways.
Unlike some of the more traditional science disciplines, environmental science tends to focus more on practical solutions than abstract research. As a result, environmental science majors go on to work in corporations, think tanks and research organizations, or in public policy to make sure that everyone is doing what they can to ensure that current and future generations have a planet to live on.
As an environmental science major, you’ll take a variety of natural and social science classes. Internships and research opportunities are of special interest to environmental science majors, who want to practice their skills and contribute to a growing body of knowledge surrounding environmental best practices.
Many environmental science majors go on to graduate school or law school, find work in government agencies and nonprofit organizations, or even apply their skills to corporations that have a close connection to the quality of the environment. As the demand for alternatives to current practices increases, environmental science majors may find themselves working for companies relating to energy, recycling and repurposing, and agriculture.
Passion drives many environmental science majors. If you have passion and you’re willing to develop your research and analytical skills to generate solutions to some of our most pressing concerns, then environmental science is the major for you!
How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?
If you’re a student who knows exactly what they want to study but not where, then creating a strong school list is an important step no matter where you are in your academic journey. You can either start by considering your chances first or narrowing down your selection based on the type of school you’re interested in.
If you want to prioritize schools you have a good chance of getting into, then you’ll want to research what the freshman profile for that school is. Sometimes called the “Class of ___ Profile,” the freshman profile highlights the academic, demographic, and extracurricular involvements of the students who were admitted to that school.
Take a look at how your own GPA and test scores compares to the averages listed on the freshman profile. If your scores are below the average, it may be less likely that you would be admitted; if your scores are above the average, you have a pretty good chance of being admitted.
You’ll also want to reflect on the type of institution you might want to attend to help you narrow down your choices. Some students prefer a large research university with lots of sports teams, while others prefer a small liberal arts college with a close-knit community. There’s no right or wrong answer, except what is right for you.
