The List of All U.S Colleges With an Electrical Engineering Major

With the increased interest in STEM disciplines, more students are considering engineering as their college major. But how do you know if you should study electrical engineering in college, and which colleges offer it as a major?

Why Study Electrical Engineering in College?

If you have strong math and science skills (especially physics) then electrical engineering might be the major for you. Engineering is a discipline where students apply science and technology to design better machines and structures (yes, engines too). Electrical engineering focuses specifically on technology involving electricity—you can imagine how much our society relies on electrical engineers!

In general, there is a high demand for engineers across all disciplines; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for electrical engineers is keeping pace with the general job growth in the U.S. You can choose to work in a variety of settings once you have completed your electrical engineering degree, whether it’s in a fast-paced technology company, research, telecommunications, or even the government.

Electrical engineers usually work on projects in teams, and you can expect your undergraduate experience to reflect this workplace trend. Electrical engineering students will first learn the mathematical and scientific foundations they need to then design and develop solutions. In their junior and senior years, you’ll start to take the more specialized engineering courses and many of your assignments will be group projects.

If you have had poor experiences with group projects in the past (many high school students do) you should feel a little better knowing that your electrical engineering classmates will often have a similar work style, and your assignments tend to be genuinely interesting and will encourage you and your classmates to work together. No matter your group project history, you’ll need strong teamwork skills to succeed as an electrical engineer after college.

To sum it all up, electrical engineering is the perfect major for you if:

  • You enjoy your math and science classes;
  • You prefer practical solutions over abstract theories;
  • You enjoy (or at least tolerate) team-based work;
  • You have an interest in technology using electricity.

How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?

With any major that you choose, it’s important to understand what your chances of being accepted to a school are and to create a strong college list based on a variety of factors. Here are some quick tips to help you pick the perfect school list:

  • Look at the freshman profile. Most colleges include something called the freshman profile, or the Class of ____ Profile, which highlights the qualities of the admitted students at that school. Compare your own GPA and test scores to those of the admitted students to get a quick idea of how likely you are to be admitted. The closer you are to their averages, or if you are above the average, the better your chances are.

  • Location and type of institution. Beyond your rough chances of getting in, you want to make sure that it’s the type of institution you want to attend. Do you want to stay in-state or go out-of-state? Do you want to attend a large research university or would you prefer a small liberal arts college? Make sure you’re looking at schools that genuinely interest you.

  • Additional school factors. Outside of the basic category that a school falls into, consider what additional resources and opportunities are offered to students, especially those within your major. Are there plenty of research, study abroad, and internship options, or is it difficult to find these resources? Are there any clubs or major-specific organizations that you could join?

Using the above tips will help you create a school list where you’ll be excited to attend any one of the schools. That said, working with a company like CollegeVine can help you improve your chances of admissions by diving deeper into important admissions factors.

We focus our efforts on the specific needs of each student based on where they’re at in their academic journey. For 9th and 10th graders, we help them strengthen their profile by identifying the classes and extracurriculars they should consider. For 11th and 12th graders, we show them what their exact chances are of getting into any school is and guide them through the application process.
