The List of All U.S Colleges With a Philosophy Major

Have you ever wondered if you could just find a list of every college that offers a particular major? Here at CollegeVine, we’ve researched what major every college has and compiled them for you so you can start building your college list. Read on to find out which colleges offer a Philosophy major!

Why Study Philosophy in College?

Philosophy is one of the longest standing majors, being one of the few subjects available at even the oldest universities in the world. In many ways, philosophy has informed many other popular disciplines, such as law, science, religion, and politics.

As a major, philosophy focuses on a wide variety of subjects, all centered on answering some of life’s biggest questions, such as:

  • How do you live a good life?
  • How do we know what we know?
  • What is the right thing to do?

Philosophy majors learn how to think critically about information and arguments, enabling them to think and express themselves clearly. They gain other valuable skills as well, such as research and analysis as well as strong writing skills.

Philosophy appeals most to students who are more interested in developing their critical thinking, constructing thoughtful arguments, and engaging with thought-provoking ideas. Many students who study philosophy go on to law school or graduate school to develop their career specialization further. Others become teachers, school administrators, or work in public policy.

As with most other humanities or social science majors, some students who may be interested in philosophy may be worried about their job prospects after graduation. It can’t be stated enough: your extracurricular activities in college are just as important as, if not more so than your major in securing your job placement after college.

Having majored in philosophy myself, I can vouch that studying philosophy benefited me and my intellectual development. As a writer, my philosophy degree helps me tremendously! If you enjoy reading, writing, and critical discussion, or are considering law school, then philosophy will be a great major for you.

How Can You Increase Your Chances of Acceptance?

While getting into your dream school generally requires that you have a strong application in all aspects, you can get a good idea of what your chances are by looking at the statistics of the freshman profile.

The freshman profile (sometimes called the Class of ___ Profile) highlights statistics about the admitted freshman students at a particular college. It will include things like the racial and gender breakdown, the average GPA and standardized test scores of admitted students as well as any interesting facts such as extracurricular involvement and class rank.

Regarding these statistics, the closer you are to the quantitative measures of GPA and test score averages, the better your chances are at that school. However, you’ll still need to develop a strong application through your essay, letters of recommendation, and any other required materials to really secure your spot.

For 9th and 10th graders, your academic profile isn’t as solidified as it will be when you’re an upperclassmen. Instead, you should use the information from these profiles to set goals for yourself and your high school experience. If you choose to work with a company like CollegeVine, we can quickly help you identify your target scores and achievements and suggest extracurriculars and classes to take to help strengthen your applicant profile.

It’s important for students of any grade level to put together a list of schools that you’re interested in, but this is especially true for 11th and 12th graders. You’ll want to consider not only your chances of being accepted to a school, but you’ll also want to think about the kind of college experience you want to have:

  • Do you want to stay in-state or go out-of-state?
  • Do you want to attend a large university with active sports teams, or would you prefer the personalized attention found at liberal arts colleges?

When we work with 11th and 12th graders, we help them create a well-rounded list of schools based on their preferences and their chances. Our students not only have a good chance of being admitted to their top choices, but they’re also excited about the possibility of attending any of the schools on their list. When it comes to making your college selection, it’s important to feel excited about your future and the opportunities available to you.
