List of All U.S. Colleges with a Mechanical Engineering Major

Need help with your college applications?  Learn how our College Apps Program can help.

Mechanical engineering is a very popular field and is sometimes referred to as the “jack of all trades” in the engineering profession. Mechanical engineers study and use mechanical solutions to solve problems or issues related to the principles of motion, energy, and force. Mechanical engineers might work on developing new solutions related to wind turbines, electric generators, refrigeration or air conditioning systems, or even power tools.

If mechanical engineering sounds like an exciting field to you, we have good news—mechanical engineering is a popular major and it’s offered at nearly countless colleges and universities across the country. To learn more about getting into a mechanical engineering program and to find out which colleges offer this major, don’t miss this post.

Why Major in Mechanical Engineering?

Young professionals with a degree in mechanical engineering have many career options available to them. Mechanical engineers can work in research and development, product design, system management, energy, or manufacturing, just to name a few. Some graduates may go on to specialize in fields like biotechnology or aerospace engineering.

Mechanical engineers can expect to work in multiple settings. Some will spend most of their time in an office or lab, doing design work, creating models, or making computer simulations. Other mechanical engineers will spend more time in the field, visiting work sites or working on equipment on site.

Mechanical engineering is also a sound choice of major in terms of career stability. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs in the mechanical engineering field will increase 9% by 2026, which is aligned with the national average for all occupations.  The median pay for a mechanical engineer is $87,370 annually.

How to Increase Your Chances of Getting In

Getting into a mechanical engineering program can be difficult, as college admissions overall are becoming more and more competitive. You’ll want to establish yourself as a strong applicant through your academics and activities in high school. Here are our top tips:

Take High Level STEM Classes. Strong candidates for a mechanical engineering program will have established their interest and skills in the STEM fields during high school. You can do this in part by taking high level courses related to mechanical engineering. AP Calculus and AP Physics are two great options to get started. These classes will not only establish your academic proficiency but may also allow you to place out of introductory level prerequisites when you begin your degree program.

Get Involved in the Engineering Activities. Another way to establish your interest and skills in the engineering field is to pursue them as extracurriculars. Things like the Robotics Club or Coding Club can be particularly helpful. Another option is pursuing an engineering problem through the science fair. Showing your ability to use science and math skills to solve engineering problems is a great step towards a mechanical engineering degree.

Build a Strong Admissions Team. The STEM fields are especially competitive, and if you want to get into a top mechanical engineering program, you’ll need to begin developing your applicant profile early in your high school years. This may seem daunting since you’ve never done anything like this before, but you don’t have to go into the process alone.  The CollegeVine Early Advising Program pairs ninth and tenth graders with successful students at top-30 schools to provide current high schoolers with advice on everything from selecting classes and extracurriculars to setting and achieving long-term goals.
